2008 Young Alaskan Artist Award

ANCHORAGE – Anchorage Festival of Music announces its 10th annual Young Alaskan Artist Award competition. This award provides a solo, professional, debut recital in Anchorage and award money to a young, aspiring classical musician pursuing a music performance degree in college.

Young artists previously selected for this award are talented performers ready to transition to the professional world and include Jaren Philleo, oboe, from Fairbanks; Audrey Solomon, violin, from Anchorage; Jennifer Bacon, soprano, from Willow; Damian Primis, bassoon, from Eagle River; Evan Drummond, classical guitar, from Anchorage; Pamela Harris, French horn, from Fairbanks; Christine Keene, soprano from Anchorage, Molly Emerman, violin from Anchorage; John Plucker, French horn from Haines; Kate Emerman, soprano from Anchorage, and Megan Bledsoe, harpist from Anchorage.

Any Alaskan pursuing a college degree or program in music performance at an accredited institution is eligible. Applicants must be at least college freshmen to apply. They must also submit two letters of recommendation, a completed application form, a minimum of a 30-minute recording and the $ 25 application fee. Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, May 2, 2008.

The Festival of Music supports Alaska’s youth and gives them opportunities to display their talents to the public in their hometown and home state. The award winner will perform a full solo recital in Anchorage in the second half of August. Proceeds from ticket sales will be given to the winner as award money.

Dear Students, Parents & Music Instructors,

The Anchorage Festival of Music announces its tenth “Young Alaskan Artist Award”. The purpose of this award is to present a young, aspiring Alaskan classical performer in a solo, professional, debut recital in Anchorage, and provide award monies. The Festival is committed to supporting our Alaskan youth, helping them on their way to the professional world, and giving them an opportunity to display their talents to the public, especially in their hometown and state. 

ELIGIBILITY:          
Any Alaskan, who is at least a college freshman pursuing a college degree or program in music performance in an accredited institution. The applicant must be ready to perform a full length (c. 60 minutes) solo debut recital in Anchorage. The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application will confirm resident eligibility. In all matters of eligibility or procedure, the committee’s decision is final.

APPLICATION PROCESS: 
Please fill out the application form with requested materials.  Enclose a high quality tape or CD with the application form, and two letters of recommendation.   One letter must be from the private instrumental/vocal instructor.  The other letter may be from another musician or a community leader who is familiar with applicant’s accomplishments.  (The letters of recommendation may be submitted with the application or sent directly to the Festival Office.)   Application Fee:  $ 25

DEADLINE:
Application materials (other than recommendations) must be sent complete in one packet with a postmark no later than Monday, May 2, 2008.

RECORDING REQUIREMENTS: 
The CD should be at least 30 minutes in length (but may be longer).  Remember that the quality of your recording plays a crucial role in the decision making.  Please attach a program with exact titles, composers and approximate timings of selections. 

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS:
Please include at least 3 works representing different styles and periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, Contemporary).  A single movement of a sonata or concerto may be used.  Only one concerto selection may be used.  Pianists and string players will NOT be allowed to play a concerto on their recitalNo orchestral excerpts are permitted.  A good guide to repertoire selection would be your senior recital requirements.

  • Pianists: Only solo repertoire.  One concerto movement may be used in the audition only.
  • Strings:  Solo instrumental and sonata or similar repertoire should be predominant. Some chamber works may be included. One concerto movement may be used only in the audition.
  • Winds & Brass:  Orchestral excerpts are not allowed.  Concerti & transcriptions permitted.
  • Percussionists: Please demonstrate a proficiency in a variety of percussion instruments. Transcriptions are allowed (ex. Bach Solo Suites transcribed for marimba).
  • Vocalists: Please present both operatic arias as well as art songs demonstrating at least 3 languages.

SELECTION PROCESS:  
A committee of prominent musicians will review the recordings.  At the discretion of the judges more than one winner may be chosen. 

AWARD      
The selected winner will perform a full solo recital in Anchorage sponsored by the Anchorage Festival of Music be in the second half of August., probably during the week of August 11, 2008.   The exact date will be determined after selection. Proceeds from the concert ticket sales will provide part of the funding for the award. Travel expenses to/from Alaska cannot be provided.  In-state travel will be accommodated at the discretion of the committee.
