Linn Weeda, Trumpet

Linn Weeda is well known to local audiences through his work as an instrumentalist, conductor, commentator and educator. Born and raised in Anchorage to a family that first came here in 1929, he participated in the Alaska Festival of Music (precursor to the Anchorage Festival) for the first time in 1971 and has been a regular member since returning to Anchorage in 1984. With the festival he has appeared as soloist, as a member of the orchestra and as conductor. Linn’s training is wide and varied: he has studied trumpet with two of the first trumpets of the Boston Symphony, and with the principal trumpets of the Atlanta, Royal Philharmonic, Rotterdam and Los Angeles Orchestras in addition to early and formative studies with James Kowalsky in Fairbanks. He has studied conducting with Gordon Wright, Charles Bruck, Gunther Schuller and Thomas Dunn, and studied solfege for many years with Lawrence Scripp. He has a Bachelors degree from the University of Alaska and a Masters from Boston University, where he was honored as student of the year and winner of the concerto contest. Linn’s activities in Anchorage include responsibilities as the Music Director of the Anchorage Youth Symphony, Principal Trumpet of the Anchorage Symphony, Anchorage Opera, and Anchorage Festival, Assistant Conductor of the ASO, and Adjunct Professor at UAA. He has appeared throughout the United States, Europe and Asia both as a soloist as well as a conductor. He has taught a variety of musical subjects both here in Alaska as well as in the ‘lower 48’. |
