12th Young Alaskan Artist Award
Winner’s Recital dedicated to the memory of Senator Ted Stevens
ANCHORAGE – The Anchorage Festival of Music joins the entire state of Alaska in mourning the tragic death of Senator Ted Stevens. It was a letter from Senator Stevens that I received in 1998 about a young talented Alaskan musician that became the catalyst for the Young Alaskan Artist Award Program. Senator Stevens pledged his support personally, through the years attended many of the winner’s concerts. His presence was especially appreciated and inspirational to the young winners.
The 2010 winner is cellist, Patrick Hopkins, of Fairbanks. He will present his debut recital on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 7:30 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church - 3900 Wisconsin St. in Anchorage. Pianist and program director, Juliana Osinchuk will accompany the young artist.
Patrick Hopkins will begin his sophomore year this fall at The Juilliard School in New York as a scholarship student of Bonnie Hampton. He graduated from its Pre-College Division in May 2009 and was the winner of the Juilliard Pre-College Concerto Competition in 2008. While in Fairbanks, Patrick was named a 2007 Young Performing Artist by the Yamaha Corporation of America, won first place in the Alaska MTNA Senior Strings competitions in 2007, 2008, and 2009, and won first place at the 2009 MTNA Northwest Division competition. Patrick appeared three times as soloist with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, as winner of its 2001, 2005, and 2006 Concerto Competitions.
The debut recital will feature works by Haydn, Schubert, Prokofiev and Chopin.
The Anchorage Festival of Music continues to demonstrate its commitment to education and Alaska's youth through their Young Alaska Artist Award concert. This program, now in its twelfth year, provides award money and a unique opportunity for Alaska's future professional musicians to be presented in recital for Anchorage audiences. This competition fills a unique niche for young Alaska artists to showcase their talent and set an example for other aspiring young artists.
Recital admission is by donation: Suggested donations are $20 for adults and $10 for students and children. A portion of the proceeds goes to the award. For more information, call the Anchorage Festival of Music office at (907) 276-2465
