June
13 7:30 pm - Gala Opening: A Broadway Spectacular!
A Tribute to the Boston Pops From
the Great White Way and beyond comes an evening of delightful
musical hits. Four outstanding vocal soloists combine the music of Broadway
with perennial orchestral favorites to pay tribute to America’s most
famous orchestral entertainers, the Boston Pops. Festival Director Grant
Cooper has played under the direction
of the legendary Arthur Fiedler and so brings an authentic touch to
an evening sure to enthrall and delight!
June 17 7:30 pm - Unfolding of Romanticism I Featuring the Mahler Quartet for piano and strings, Poulenc's Trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano and Schumann's Quintet for piano and strings. Romanticism in music flowered following models in other arts, such as literature and painting. Once composers discovered musical means of expressing these human qualities, each example became a testament of that composer’s time. place, and culture. Our program traces a century of development of this process, with fascinating contrasts of the Germanic and the Gallic viewpoint. June 19 7:30 pm - Grant Cooper's "Boyz in the Wood" Family Concert - Music for Children of All Ages The Festival Orchestra returns with Maestro Grant Cooper’s "BOYZ IN THE WOOD." This version of the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood is told with absolutely delightful music and singing. The interactive concert experience will also allow children (of all ages!) to learn about how music is composed as the composer himself tells us of the process he went through to create this story in sound. Mr. Cooper’s music runs the gamut of musical styles, from Opera to Rap to Dixieland, so there is something for everyone to enjoy in this delightful program! Plan on joining the artists after the concert for an ice cream social! June 21 7:30 pm - Unfolding of Romanticism II Featuring:
the Beethoven Septet and Tchaikovsky's
Symphony No. 5 The door to musical Romanticism was thrown open wide by Ludwig van Beethoven. Perhaps no composer has epitomized the revolutionary and the romantic better than this lonely genius. And, at the other end of the nineteenth century, Peter Tchaikovsky created musical canvases of romantic sentiment dripping in Russian sentiment. His Fifth Symphony is among the most popular in the repertoire and will provide a stirring conclusion to this year’s Anchorage Festival of Music.
